Resources produced for the Royal Forestry Society
by Catherine Nuttgens,
Hugh Mathieson and Mike Hawley.
Edited by Rachel Colclough.

The resources in this pack are intended to help teachers develop outdoor, 'hands on' activities during woodland visits. However, many of the activities will benefit from classroom discussion prior to a visit, or follow up work on returning to school. The Royal Forestry Society has an excellent computer game - The Pancake Wood Game on their website, which will be a beneficial classroom aid.
These resources are free for you to download, but we do ask you to register for a password, which you will receive immediately, so that we know who is using the resources. Please note that your contact details will only be used to keep you updated with developments in the Teaching Trees website and will not be passed on to a third party.
Woodlands provide opportunities to meet the requirements of programmes of study across the curriculum. Beyond the obvious links with science and the environment, a day visit to a woodland can contribute to the curriculum in Mathematics, English, PHSE and Art.
Teachers are encouraged to adapt the activities to meet the needs of their children. We would welcome ideas and comments for extending the range of activities on the website. Please email us.
While the bulk of the current activities are most suitable for Key Stages 1 and 2, some can be adapted for use at Key Stage 3 and there will be further development of ideas for work at Key Stage 4 and above. It is hoped that this section can be developed further as the project progresses.
